How To Get There

Getting to Thulusdhoo

Upon arrival at the Maldives International Airport, you will find an ATM, a Pharmacy, a Telecommunications shop where local SIM cards can be purchased, hygienic toilets and a variety of small shops selling food, drinks, and souvenirs. Baggage storage is available and there is a very helpful Information desk if you need.

Ferry’s depart every ten minutes to the island capital ‘Male’ (a ten-minute trip) and cost $1USD. A bus service departs regularly to Hulhumale. It is best to have arranged your airport pickup before your arrival or at least have accurate information as to your various options how to reach our Maldives guesthouse on Thulusdhoo island.

Activities and Excursions

Surfing

You are fortunate to have some of the best surfing spots of Maldives right in front of Thulusdhoo Island. Jump into the clear blue water and enjoy the waves. Cokes and Chickens are well known by surfing communities all over the world. There are spots which are suitable for beginners and for advanced surfers.

Swells begin arriving toward the end of March, increasing in consistency and peaking from June to August. Great waves can still be had in September with October easing and November being a better time to simply snorkel and relax. Water temperature averages 28°C throughout the year. The reef bottom surf breaks offer everything from peaky performance waves to long gentle glassy walls, almond shaped tubes, and occasional days of heaving round barrels

Apart of the most beautiful beaches and turquois water the Maldives are world famous for surfing opportunities. On CNN’s Top 50 surfing destinations in the world you can find the Maldives among the Top 10.

Our surfer guesthouse is on Thulusdoo island which benefits from the world-renowned surfing conditions. Its consistency, quality of ride, and serene natural surrounds. Thulusdhoo is in the thick of an incredible stretch of coastline ideal for a perfect surfing experience in Maldives. Thulusdhoo has two famous surf spots Cokes and Chickens.

Cokes: Most consistent Performance Wave for Surfing in Maldives

Breaking right off Thulusdhoo island, this premier right hander is the most consistent performance wave in the Maldives. Named after the Coca Cola factory situated on Thulusdhoo island. The wave is recommended for surfers with at least some experience as it offers speed and power throughout. Small peaky days consist of back-dooring small A-frame barrels, exiting the barrel section with speed for one or two performance turns.

As the swell size & period increases, the fun peaks turn to long workable walls. The best swells of the year allow for almond shaped barrels on the deepest take off point that widen into proper round stand up barrels through the middle & end section. Offering quality rides from waist height swells, right up to triple over head – Cokes is the “Go to” spot for those who like some action in their waves.

Chickens: Beginners to intermediate surfer’s wave when small

Across the channel from Thulusdhoo island lies the surf break known as Chickens. At small size this wave offers long rides with a thin lip and fun usable nature. Waves can peel at a high speed or be much slower depending on the swell direction. At a small size this wave is a favorite with confident beginner to intermediate surfers, the flat and relatively deep bottom being very forgiving in nature.

As the swell size approaches double overhead, the gentle nature of Chickens changes to a super-fast medium power wave offering very long rides with eye watering speed and power throughout. The best swells of the year offer long barrels with sections for big drawn out power turns and long section floaters. Regarded by many as the best left in the Maldives.

Boat transfers to distant surf spots

For your Maldives surfing experience boat transfers can be arranged to more distant surf breaks including Sultans, Honky’s, Jails, Ninjas, and some lesser surfed spots. These waves can get exceptionally good in the right conditions or can simply provide a fun alternative to the surf spots on offer right out the front.

Hire Boards

A small number of hire boards are available for those unable to travel with their own surfboard. Please contact us for info on what board sizes are currently available.

Snorkeling

Some of the clearest and warmest water in the world, along with an abundance of fish and coral species has made the Maldives world famous for Snorkeling and Diving. Manta rays and the occasional harmless Whale Shark feed on the plankton while the many smaller fish species of diverse shapes and colors swim amongst the vivid coral. The larger reef fish are friendly and inquisitive. There are deep drop offs into the abyss where the largest fish dwell or excellent shallow water snorkeling options where the smaller and most colorful species dwell.

Fishing

Fishing is one of the great attractions to the Maldives. Strict laws against non-sustainable commercial fishing methods have helped these Atolls retain an abundance of marine life. Thulusdoo has a number of diverse fishing boats targeting everything from large Marlin, Sailfish and Yellowfin Tuna, along with smaller pelagic species such as Trevally, Barracuda and Rainbow runner. Night time fishing excursions target bottom feeding reef fish. These species can be found within close proximity to the island.

Dolphin Watching

On Thulusdhoo Island you have the unique oportunity to see dolphins just in front of the beach. Keep your eyes open while relaxing at the dining area to catch a glimpse of these friendly creatures. If you want you can go on a boat tour to see the dolphins even closer and experience the sounds of the highly intelligent mammals that seem to smile at you while jumping out of the water.

Island Tour

For such a small island, Thulusdhoo has a surprising amount of recreational and Industrial activity to see and enjoy. Our island tours aim to show just how the local Maldivian lives, the best, and the more difficult aspects of life in these isolated atolls. Check out the industry including fish drying factories, boat building yards, sea cucumber processing, the Maldives sole Coca-Cola factory and the agricultural section. You can visit the school, the power house, and learn of the islands history.
